Intern Company Announces Audition for
2008 Young Adult Summer Workshops

The Interns put together a short video of what they are all about. For an idea of what you might be getting into, (Warning: 21 MB video file)

About Us

This year's production was the musical "Working" The Burlington County Footlighters Intern Company is a theatre education program for students between the ages of 15 and 20. Now entering its sixth year, the Intern Company has been a tremendous success. As members of the Intern Company, students learn about community theatre by mounting a full-scale production. Intern Company students handle every aspect of the production - acting, designing and building the set and lights, designing and managing costumes and make-up, handling ticket reservations and publicity - Intern Company students really do put on their own show!

Past successes have included William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and last year's hit production of "Smile". This year, the Intern Company will take on a new challenge- doing the musical "Working".

Written by Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked,” “Godspell”), “Working” is a look at a day in the life of people in all lines of work – from the executive with the office at the top of the skyscraper to the man built that skyscraper, from the telephone operator to the parking attendant who parks their cars. Their stories are funny, sad, and most of all inspiring. “Working” is a perfect show for musical theatre veterans and beginners alike – several roles don’t require any singing at all!

Interested in Getting Involved Behind the Scenes?

Any student with an interest in set design, set construction, lighting, sound, costuming, or any of the other non-performance elements of theatre are encouraged to consider involvement with Smile. The Intern Company's all-student design team and technical staff provide a great opportunity for hands-on experience. Interested tech students are encouraged to e-mail Kevin Esmond at kevinesmond@comcast.net.

Under the supervision of Footlighter mentors, Intern Company students are given the opportunity to spend the summer mounting their own community theatre production, where the students themselves are responsible for set and lighting design, costumes and make-up, acting and stage management, and even publicity and ticket sales.

"I've been proud of their efforts since we started - a comedy called Don't Mention My Name, with a cast of 8 and a crew of 4, was our first show, and in just three years we'd moved on to Stage Door, a 1930's melodrama with a cast of 23, a crew of 8, full period costumes and hair, and challenging material, director Kevin Esmond said."

What students are saying about the program

  • "The best place to spend a summer is with the Intern Company at Burlington County Footlighters."
  • "Working with the Intern Company was one of the most enjoyable working experiences I've ever had and I can't wait to do it again."
  • "The BCF Intern Company is a fantastic program for young people to not only
participate in theatre over the summer, meet great people and make amazing friends!  I would definitely recommend it to anyone who asked!"
  • "...it was so great to put on a good, entertaining show, and just have fun. It really reminded me of why I wanted to pursue theatre in the first place. It's not always about getting the lead and getting award nominations.  It's about doing good work, learning something, sharing something, and having fun."
  • "The Intern Company was a great theatre experience and a great chance to act with some new people.  I'm going to be doing it for as long as I can."
