Footlighters Playhouse began life in the late
1890's as the first African-American school in Cinnaminson Township,
NJ. Evidence of its origins as a one-room schoolhouse can still be
seen on the walls of our basement and within the attic. The school
has been expanded many times over the years, on several different
levels, creating an interesting venue for theatre. It is easy to get
lost in its history and space. It spent many years as the Eleanor
Phillips elementary school, was converted to a school for special needs
students, and spent a few years housing the Board of Education.
Ruth Iversen and our then president Sam Fogel discovered it in 1983
and negotiated a lease from the BOE for $1/year. On May 9, 2000 we have
been fortunate enough to purchase the building, and wish to thank the
many generous donors and Pamela Grimme, our facilities director, who
made that historic event possible. See below for rental details.
