As Bees In Honey Drown

May 7—22, 2010; Fri & Sat 8pm, Sun 2pm

  • By Douglas Carter Bean
  • Directed by Marc Forget

The intoxication of fame... the rapid, swirling business of being SOMEBODY in the Big Apple... the temptation of luxuries... and the underlying quest to find oneself when the next big thing leaves you out in the cold... These are just some of the themes of As Bees in Honey Drown, a delicious, decidedly metropolitan comedy. When the success of small town Evan Wyler's debut novel throws him suddenly into the decadent New York scene, he latches onto the beguiling Alexa Vere de Vere, a sort of modern-day Sally Bowles, hoping to sustain his new status by completing a screenplay of her fabulous life story. But just who is Alexa, really? It's a question that will baffle Evan as he remembers her words: "You're not the person you were born—who wonderful is?"

The Secret Garden

Sept 18—Oct 3, 2009; Fri & Sat 8pm, Sun 2pm

  • Book & Lyrics by Marsha Norman; Music by Lucy Simon
  • Based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett
  • Directed by Sarah Dugan

Based on Burnett's classic children's novel and adapted for stage by a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, The Secret Garden is an enchanting musical for the entire family! After the loss of her parents, 11-year-old Mary Lennox moves to England to live with her uncle, where she discovers a magical world - a secret garden - in which she and her sickly cousin, Colin, ultimately find delight and come to terms with their losses and themselves. Featuring some of the most eloquent and sweeping melodies written for Broadway and told in a mesmerizing blend of dreams, flashbacks, memories, and present, this compelling tale will captivate adults even as children fall under its spell.

Steel Magnolias

Nov 6—21, 2009; Fri & Sat 8pm Sun 2pm

  • By Robert Harling
  • Directed by Tim Sagges

Truvy and the gang are back again with all the wit, sass, and Louisiana charm that have made them favorites of the American stage. In Truvy's salon, sharp-tongued Ouiser spars with lifelong friend Clairee, Annelle finds liberation... and God, and M'Lynn and her only daughter, Shelby, share the experiences of growing up, moving on, and finally letting go. As the play moves through the lives of these women, their inner selves shine through the antic banter of small-town beauty shop gossip and they reveal a collaborative strength that celebrates the bonds of friendship and the renewing cycle of life. Steel Magnolias is a comedy with an impossibly big heart for those who share Truvy’s sentiment: “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion!”
