The Characters

PLEASE NOTE: the cast calls for two African-American actors who are sensitive to the requirements of presenting a play set in the Deep South at the beginning of the 20th century.

CHARACTERS (ages are only suggestions):
Addie (40-55): African-American woman, conscience of the play; smart, speaks her mind, sees and knows all.
Cal (30-50): middle-aged African-American man; tries to reason things out; follows Addie’s directions.
Birdie Hubbard (35-50): pretty, well-bred but faded southern lady; nervous, timid, sad, excitable, beaten-down.
Oscar Hubbard (40-50): sour, mean-spirited and jealous; always feeling cheated out of life.
Leo Hubbard (20): “a weak kind of good looks”; not too bright, but sneaky; tries to connive a way out of trouble.
Regina Hubbard Giddens (40): smart, handsome woman not content with her life; she wants it all.
William Marshall (45): pleasant, self-possessed business man.
Benjamin Hubbard (55): jovial but cunning, patient – will wait to get his way; never angry - but don’t cross him.
Alexandra Giddens (17): pretty, delicate young lady; sheltered, but starting to question life.
Horace Giddens(45-50): once attractive, but now ill; intelligent, soft-spoken, self-aware.

The Story

"A rarely seen American classic! Come visit the Hubbard family deep in the American South, just after the Civil War, for a shocking tale of the things we do in the quest for money and power. Ben and Oscar, brothers and rivals, must rely on money from their ailing brother-in-law, Horace, to see their dreams of a local cotton gin come true. But their sister Regina, ever shrewder and crueler than her brothers realize, has her own plans for her husband's fortune. The iconic dysfunctional family, each Hubbard attempts to maneuver impressionable spouses and children in his (or her!) own favor, only to find that the deepest of desires are also the most destructive."

To Prepare:  Auditions will consist of readings from the script. The director is seeking a diverse cast of male and female actors between ages 17 and 60. All roles are open.

No audition appointment is necessary, nor are any fees charged to audition. Simply come along, and do bring a friend. Dress comfortably, and bring any items (resume, photos) etc. you may have. A professional resume or photo is NOT necessary to audition, neither is acting experience.

If cast, you will be expected to assist the crew with breakdown of the set after the run, and read and abide by our simple CAST AGREEMENT while at Footlighters facilities.

Also, be sure to bring a pal who may be interested in joining the fun backstage, by helping with props, costumes and makeup. You'll have plenty of time to socialize in the actors lounge, which is equipped with a closed-circuit TV view of the stage. We can always use the help.

So you won't miss out on future Footlighters audition and workshop notices,  register on our Mailing List Sign-up page and be sure to check the box for the e-mail notification option.
